C DUNCAN
Don’t miss the free in-store launch of Alluvium in Mono, August 11th, 8pm.
‘Alluvium’ is the fourth album from C Duncan, Glasgow’s classically trained multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter, released through Bella Union.
After the haunting raptures of Architect (2015), the Twilight Zone-inspired reveries of The Midnight Sun (2016) and the richly melodic Health (2019), Alluvium is a sublime palate-refresher for Duncan (C for Christopher), brimming with revitalised fluency: a warming dispatch from the daylight zone.
Alluvium breaks open, a new dawn of harmony and sweeping string synths blossoming in. Duncan's vocal is centre stage, a soothing croon whirling softly and unabashed to ache into his upper registers. Immaculate sounding, Alluvium is cushioned with a sublime production that is as rich in harmony and texture as a modern update to a Beach Boys production. A track like Heaven bounces along with a Martyn Ware-style mid 80s production (is Heaven a nod to the producers' band?), it's stirring and flawless.
C Duncan is nothing if not diverse in his musical talents and ambitions. In other points on Alluvium we're reminded of a kind of aching nostalgia, with some tracks sounding like Panda Bear dosed in maple syrup, with Duncan's voice, maturing like a fine wine taking the helm. While varied in its moods, it's an album that's elegant in its richness and not afraid to be bathed in positivity, with a kind of new dawn, staying-up-til-dawn ecstasy suggested liberally by Duncan's virtuoso musicianship.
C Duncan will be performing LIVE in Mono for our In-Store launch of Alluvium.
