Franz Nicolay is a multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter. Having released a handful of records under his own name, testing the limits of harmony, genre and production, Franz rejoined 'the world's best bar band' The Hold Steady, on keys, after a 6 year break. He has also been a member of cabaret-punk orchestra World/Inferno Friendship Society, “ Balkan-jazz quartet Guignol, co-founded the composer-performer collective Anti-Social Music, was a touring member of agit-punks Against Me!; and recorded or performed with dozens of other acts. His first book, The Humorless Ladies of Border Control was named a “Season’s Best Travel Book” by The New York Times; his second book, the novel Someone Should Pay For Your Pain, was named one of Rolling Stone “Best Music Books of 2021.” His most recent album "New River" emerged earlier this year on Don Giovanni Records:
“Nicolay remains one of the finest chroniclers of the miseries, joys and petty discomforts of a life lived in music.” 7/10—UNCUT
“Musically vibrant…vibrant, heartfelt…spirited and full-bodied.”—Glide Magazine
“Show[s] his brilliance as a songwriter.”—Northern Transmission
“[A] journey where multiple musical moods move like water…New River is a full-bodied experience that is best enjoyed from start to finish…Nicolay has assembled a tremendous supporting cast to help bring his poetic and heartfelt lyrics to life. The record is an ambitious undertaking—one that he knocks out of the park.”—Bearded Gentlemen Music
